Quality Scenario 2

Reducing Patient Falls

Guidance and tools to help make sure you are prepared for the next unannounced survey.

About this Scenario

As the quality director of ABC Hospital, I have been tasked with leading the Performance Improvement / QAPI program. I am a nurse with no background or training in statistics, and my only exposure to quality improvement in the past was by participating on one QI team as a nurse manager on a medical-surgical unit. That project was focused on reducing patient falls with injury, but I don’t think it was very successful, and I didn’t get to give much input into the process or team decisions. Now the Chief Nursing Officer for my hospital would like me to revise the Falls Prevention Quality Improvement Team and lead the QI efforts. What steps do I need to take to accomplish this?
